Packing your entire home before a move is a daunting process. What is necessary to complete the task? When do you start? How do you pack your belongings?
Supplies
First things first, in order to properly wrap and pack your belongings, you will want to have the correct supplies on hand. Some common moving supplies include:
- Moving boxes of varying sizes
- Small and medium boxes for fragile or heavy items
- Large and extra large boxes for light items and larger belongings
- File boxes for transporting documents
- Picture boxes for framed artwork
- Lamp boxes
- Cellular boxes for separating glassware
- Wardrobe boxes for clothing
- Wrapping materials
- Packing paper or unprinted newsprint (printed newsprint leaves ink on belongings)
- Bubble wrap (do not place directly on glass)
- Moving pads and blankets
- Mattress covers
- Stretch wrap
- Items to finish packing your boxes
- Packing labels and stickers
- Packing tape and a packing tape dispenser
- Permanent markers
When to start packing
A good rule of thumb is to start packing as soon as you know you're moving, but as every move is different, the amount of belongings you will be moving should determine how far in advance to begin. A good rule of thumb is to start packing about a month and a half before your relocation.
TIP: To limit the amount of packing required, sort through all your belongings ahead of time and decide what to keep, what to throw away/recycle and what to donate. The less you bring the shorter and cheaper your move.
How to pack
After determining when and where to start packing, it's time to actually pack your belongings for your relocation.
- Start with the least used rooms first, leaving the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms for last
- Seal the bottoms of all your boxes before packing to prevent them from breaking open in transit
- Move from room to room packing similar items, using your packing materials wisely
- When packing fragile items, cushion the bottom of the box first before adding your wrapped belongings and top off the box with another layer of cushioning (the goal here is to prevent fragile items from shifting in transit)
- Pack the items you are least likely to use first and save important belongings for last
- Securely close all full boxes with packing tape
- Clearly label all boxes with their contents and their intended destination in your new home
- Mark boxes containing fragile items as "FRAGILE" (also note which way movers should carry these boxes with an arrow pointing up toward the top of the box)
Pack a first night survival kit
It's important to remember not to box up everything you own, because you'll still require certain essentials for the first night in your new home. In a clearly marked bin (or bins) which you transport separately with valuables and important paperwork, you will want to pack the following:
- Family essentials
- Medications
- First aid kit
- Pajamas
- Clothes for the next day or two
- Chargers for electronics
- Toys (to familiarize children and pets with their new home)
- Entertainment (to keep children occupied)
- Bathroom supplies
- Toiletries
- Shower curtain
- Towels
- Toilet paper
- Hand soap
- Bedroom supplies
- Nightlight
- Sheets, blankets, pillows and pillow cases
- Air mattress or sleeping bags
- Kitchen supplies
- Snacks
- Disposable plates, napkins and utensils
- Pet food, treats, and food and water dishes
- Cleaning supplies
- Garbage bags
